KRISTIAN FLETCHER

Kristian Fletcher is best known for his work in Brisbane as an events co-ordinator / publicist / ideas man / producer and disc jockey - ever-promoting DJ parties, classic/cult movie nights and retrospective events under his name and business Able Productions (formed 2003).

A childhood spent listening to vinyl records of the '70s, dressing-up in anything he could get his hands on, and being involved in theatre gave Kristian the preparation he needed to become a modern disciple of his first loves - retro music and cult/classic movies.

Kristian first came to the attention of Brisbane in 2000 when he launched a full-fledged Rocky Horror revival with interactive screenings of the film acompanied by the floorshow cast, Cards 4 Sorrow. Interest in the show has never let up, with the cast continuing to perform to this day with a loyal following.

Cards 4 Sorrow have performed in such venues as Schonell Cinema, Boggo Road jail, Cremorne Theatre and Globe Theatre, plus appeared on Briz31's Tamara Tonite, Channel 9's 'Extra'... and even Channel 10's weather!

Kristian's greatest moment was meeting Richard O'Brien, the creator of Rocky Horror, in his hometown of Hamilton, New Zealand in 2005.

For the 30th anniversary of singer Kate Bush's debut single Wuthering Heights, Kristian and entertainer Taylor Gibson teamed up to present Kate Bush Night with the 'All Yours Babooshka' tribute show at the Alliance Hotel. These two sell-out shows in 2003 were the first of many similar events Kristian has gone on to present. In 2005, he was proud to organise the launch of Kate's album 'Aerial' in conjunction with EMI.

Kristian's growing interest in cult/classics films (both good and bad) led to his first non-Rocky Horror movie event: ThrillFest, a two-week film festival showcasing a selection of the best horror films of all time, at Schonell Theatre in January 2004 (it was here his Little Shop of Horrors mini-floorshow was trialed).

An enjoyable stint on the Floating Cinema (located on a trawler in the Brisbane River at South Bank) saw Kristian organising some great events (3 sellout ABBA parties!). His name was fast becoming synonymous with interesting and out-there projects.

Sucessful events at Metro Arts such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 30th Anniversary (Aug 2004) and Madonna Night (Oct 2004) led Kristian to start Monthly Cult Films @ Metro Arts which ran from January 2005 - February 2006.

In 2005, Kristian created Retro-Spekt, a 'travelling' retro nightclub (meaning, it changes venues regularly), which has appeared at Metro Arts, Alliance Hotel, Tank Hotel and regularly at Globe Theatre, 220 Brunswick St Fortitude Valley. Playing the best rock, pop and disco music of the '70s and '80s, Retro-Spekt has become Brisbane's favourite retro party. A guaranteed great night out with the songs of yesteryear!

After showcasing a series of 28 cult films at Metro Arts and causing some controversy with the films on offer (Kristian is the first person in Australia to screen the exploitation flick I Spit On Your Grave in public - complete with walk-outs) - he moved over to the Globe Theatre for the launch of the cult cinema program in 2006 and continued as film programmer and publicist until 2009...

2008

Kristian started as a writer/contributor for Queensland Pride magazine.

A reworked screening of Little Shop of Horrors complete with fan floorshow took place at Globe Theatre in May.

2009

Worked as publicist for Globe Theatre's live music events (a change to the cult movies he was used to) plus began a publicity/marketing role at StageDoor Dinner Theatre in Bowen Hills.

Kristian's interview with lead singer Fred Schneider of The B-52s resulted in Fletcher meeting the band in November

An Afternoon with Audrey Hepburn kick-starts an annual May event

2010

Kristian met one of his idols - director John Waters (March)

He ran sporadic film/music events at Globe Theatre (such as Breakfast Club/16 Candles) and Hole Album Launch Party.

With the opening of Tribal Theatre (the old Dendy, 346 George St Brisbane), Kristian ran successful movie nights on Sunday afternoons, Saturdays (such as the return of An Afternoon with Audrey Hepburn) and Wednesday nights, leading to the creation of a monthly movie night WEIRD WEDNESDAYS.

Cards 4 Sorrow celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a screening on Friday 29 October 2010 at Globe Theatre. Thanks to TeachmeCameras for photographing the night. Photos can be viewed here

Kristian reinvented Retro-Spekt with 'retro cabarets' - the first being a tribute to Kate Bush to celebrate the 25th anniversary of THE HOUNDS OF LOVE.

2011

Kristian continued to present a series of retro cabarets at StageDoor Dinner Theatre and now hosts a monthly movie club at Brisbane Square Library.

He has commenced work on a book about cult films and based on 11 years experience as an exhibitor...
